State of Florida's 2011 Legislative Session Amends Condo Board Members Continuing Education Requirement

Under Florida Statute Section 718.112 newly elected or appointedcondominium board officers and directors must provide writtencertification of their knowledge of Florida condominium law andtheir association's bylaws.

In lieu of this certification, board members may "submit acertificate of having satisfactorily completed the educationalcurriculum administered by a division-approved condominium educationprovider within 1 year before or 90 days after the date of electionor appointment."

Florida's Division of Condominium, Timeshares, and Mobile Homeshas approved online training as a path to qualifying for condominiumboard service. Responding to recent amendments to Florida'sCondominium Act, the Division seeks to ensure that condominiumassociation officers and directors are properly qualified forpositions that are equivalent to those of corporate officers.

To satisfy the new state requirement, condominium associationofficers and directors may now take the state-approved onlinecourse, "Condominium Operations: A Primer for Directors andOfficers," developed by e-learning professionals at The HumanEquation, a State of Florida-approved education provider ofcondominium training. The two-hour interactive course, written ineveryday language and covering such essential topics as balancingrights and responsibilities of residents, conducting elections, andholding association meetings, may be accessed 24/7 from any Internet-connected computer. Users may pause and resume the course at theirleisure, and, upon completing the course, receive a certificate theycan submit to qualify for board service.

Company President Anita Byer notes that the CondominiumOperations course, one of nine condominium training coursesdeveloped by The Human Equation, "provides a convenient andaffordable solution for acquiring the knowledge needed to governeffectively." The goal of the course, according to Byer, is, "toempower condominium board members with the knowledge they need tolimit conflict and improve relations among residents."
